Willmott Dixon has won a £55m contract to redevelop the headquarters of Hertfordshire Constabulary in Welwyn Garden City. The current site was built in the 1960s and will be demolished to make way for a 9000 square metre development where over 600 operational staff will be located from summer 2026.

David Lloyd, the Police and Crime Commissioner appointed Willmott Dixon using the SCAPE Construction Framework. The site will be built to achieve a BREEAM Excellent for ultra-high sustainability standards and is targeting WELL Platinum Certification, a major benchmark for advancing health and wellbeing within a single building. It is also expected that the long-term running costs will be less than the current premises.

Vincent + Gorbing Associates designed the new site to accommodate open office space, gym, restaurant and office facilities that are joined centrally with a four storey atrium topped by a glulam timber structure roof. The atrium accommodates the entrance, further meeting rooms and open agile working space.

‘The overall building is situated within a sensitively designed landscape – outlook on all sides –  to enhance staff well-being and promote biodiversity and sustainable forms of drainage. The completion of the master-plan will deliver a high quality design befitting of one of the country’s leading Constabularies.’

The new home for some of Hertfordshire Constabulary’s staff draws together different functions including the Major Crime Unit, victim services and the dog unit, along with the senior leadership team and operational support staff. Last week, police staff elsewhere in the county celebrated the official opening of a new police station in Watford after the previous location was deemed to be at the end of its economic life.

“We are delighted to be working alongside Hertfordshire Constabulary to deliver their new headquarters. As a proud Hertfordshire-based company, it is fantastic to be starting on site to provide a new facility for our county’s police force.

Stewart Brundell, MD of Willmott Dixon in North London and Northern Homes Counties.

Willmott Dixon completed its project to build a new fire station and training centre at Horsham in West Sussex and continues to develop a new forensics centre for Thames Valley Police.
