Emergency services across England are to receive part of a £530m pot for greening their estates as the government unveils the winners from the latest phase of its public sector decarbonisation scheme.

Out of a total of 189 beneficiaries, 14 come from the blue light world, with police fire and ambulance services receiving just over £15m in grant funding.

The £15m total doesn’t include the £3m award to Oxfordshire County Council, the home of the fire and rescue service. Part of its award will be spent on seven of its fire stations, replacing gas fired heating and making other station improvements.

The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme is now in its third phase of funding and is providing over £1.425 billion of grant funding to public sector bodies between 2022 and 2026.. It supports the aim of reducing emissions from public sector buildings by 75 per cent by 2037, compared to a 2017 baseline. The funding announcement this week is for phase 3c.

Police forces to benefit from changes to the way they heat their buildings include Northumbria, Humberside and West Yorkshire. All of these forces will replace gas-fired boilers and improve their energy management.

In Dorset, over £300k will be used to decarbonise the Police Firing Range at its headquarters. In nearby Gloucestershire and Avon and Somerset, air source heat pumps will be installed in police stations.

The Met is the biggest winner with a grant of £5.7m focused on six of the capital’s police stations due to get solar panels, air source heat pumps and in the east, Chingford will see new double glazing and insulation fitted to improve its overall energy efficiency.

The capital also saw another large award with London Fire Brigade receiving £2m to continue its efforts to decarbonise its 100+ fire stations. Nine stations will benefit from this stage of funding, with a range of energy efficiency improvements including lighting controls and LED lights. Five stations will get solar panels as well.

Other winners from fire and rescue services include, Nottinghamshire, Royal Berkshire, and Devon and Somerset. Again focused on fire stations, the measures include improvements to water heating and a range of insulations measures intended to prevent heat loss.

Two ambulance services – South Western and East Midlands – will benefit from £420k of investment in their estates which includes two ambulance stations and a training centre. The money will be used to replace gas-fired boilers, insulate pipework and improve roof insulation.
