Why innovation is at the heart of making sure PPE remains responsive to a changing world

Challenges faced by fire and rescue Services are intensifying, reflecting the rapidly changing world around us. Global population and lifestyle changes have also changed how people live and are housed, affecting the types of call outs first responders receive. As a result, it is critical that firefighters are equipped with PPE that provides effective protection in all circumstances.

Innovations in boot fastening have evolved rapidly, as the market begins to move away from the traditional pull-on model and new lacing systems are coming to market to improve boot application.

The introduction of HAIX’s RapidFit system saw a world first as it allows boots to tighten with only one hand and automatically holds the lacing in place after tightening, removing the need for additional tying or tucking, therefore saving firefighters vital time.

Ensuring a proper and adjustable fit is crucial to help firefighters mitigate the risk of workplace accidents when executing complex operations.

Other factors also play a part in the risk of injuries, and it is innovations to combat these that are now most pertinent. New materials are being explored to combat issues like weight gain in wet conditions, or heat loss in cold conditions without compromising on performance, as firefighters have always faced a trade-off between comfort and protection. The boots need to remain as light as possible and tough enough to resist sharp and abrasive objects, while maintaining the highest standards of waterproofing and breathable protection.

Manufacturers have the responsibility to develop materials and products that offer more versatility, are lighter yet stronger and are more environmentally sustainable. There are already boots on the market that do this well, but to improve, PPE manufacturers must prioritise continuous innovation to ensure products can effectively respond to new and existing challenges.

The industry has a responsibility to meet the needs of those on the frontline, particularly as they are constantly evolving.

This requires manufacturers to speak to firefighters on their experiences and address key concerns around PPE performance and requirements. Events and trade shows such as The Emergency Services Show provide a great opportunity to gather this information firsthand and exchange knowledge and expertise across the sector, which can then be incorporated into better, more responsive boot designs.

I will be talking about the future development of PPE footwear during my session on the Firefighter PPE Stage, ‘Why innovation is at the heart of making sure PPE remains responsive to a changing world’ which takes place on 18 September at 1300 at The Emergency Services Show.
