Police chiefs announce shortlist for tech awards

Police Digital Awards

The National Police Chiefs’ Council has published a list of the finalists for the inaugural Police Digital Awards 2024, where 110 nominations vied for eight awards spanning the breadth of digital, data and technology activity in forces across the country.

The six person judging panel is drawn from the National Police Chiefs’ Council Digital, Data and Technology Coordination Committee, Police Digital Service, and techUK (representing the supplier community). The shortlist was published on 15 October and is shown below:

Innovation

Recognises individuals or teams using innovative approaches to tackle police challenges.

  • Bedfordshire – NECTAR Project
  • South Wales and Gwent – Facial Recognition Project
  • West Midlands – Andi ESRA automated 101 Project
  • Avon and Somerset – Custody Tracker for Solicitors
Cyber security

Honours individuals or teams going above and beyond to safeguard police systems and data.

  • Cheshire Cheshire Constabulary – IT Security Team​​
  • Thames Valley / Hampshire IoW – ​Delivery of Cyber Response Plan, Training, and Testing
  • Merseyside – Eurovision 2023 Legacy – A One Team approach to Cyber Security
Front line impact 

Celebrates the use of digital data and technology to directly enhance services delivered by frontline officers and police staff.

  • Bedfordshire – Auto Redaction Project
  • Police Scotland – Core Operational Solutions (COS) programme
  • Cumbria – Tactical delivery of The Police Digital Academy
  • Humberside – Victim Journey and My Police Portal
Productivity / Value for money

Acknowledges teams or individuals who demonstrably reduced costs while improving service quality or capabilities.

  • Bedfordshire – Auto Redaction Project
  • West Yorkshire – online digital statement
  • Greater Manchester – Whole Force system IT change
Accessibility

Recognises initiatives or technology implementations that improve accessibility, equity, or diversity within police workplaces.

  • Police Service Northern Ireland – The ME App
  • West Yorkshire – Digital Policing – Digital Accessibility Initiative
Excellence in service

Recognises teams or individuals who excel at delivering exceptional service in police digital or technology settings.

  • Warwickshire – Data and Insight Team, business intelligence dashboards
  • The Met – Applied Geospatial Data Science
Excellence in leadership

Recognises individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, significantly contributing to their organisation values and mision whilst inspiring others.

  • Cumbria – LEDS rollout replacing PNC
  • The Met – NPCC Digital Public Contact Programme Rollout
  • Warwickshire – Digital Transformation Programme ‘Empower Technology’
Unsung digital hero

Recognises individuals who work for policing in an ICT or transformation role  make significant contributions but often go unnoticed or underappreciated.

  • Surrey and Sussex – Jenn Hutchinson, Mobile Development Manager 
  • Bedfordshire – Pip Keys, Deputy Programme Director of Continuous Improvement (365 Guru!)
  • Police Service Northern Ireland – Person 1, Communications Tower Estate 
  • Police Service Northern Ireland – Person 2, Tetra Critical National Infrastructure 

The winners will be announced at an online awards ceremony on 23 October. Information about the awards can be found on the Police Digital Service website.
