The Welsh Ambulance Service has been crowned the winner of two NHS Wales Awards 2024.

The annual NHS Wales Awards celebrate the quality improvement work that has transformed the experience and outcomes for people in Wales.

It is also a showcase of the talented health and care staff working together to improve services and patient care across Wales.

At last night’s (Thursday 24 October 2024) ceremony in Cardiff, the Trust had a double award win for two different improvement projects.

The winning projects are:

  • NHS Wales Effective Care Award: Effective introduction of Penthrox pain relieve
  • NHS Wales Safe Care Award: Maternity and Neonatal Safety Support Programme

Jason Killens, Chief Executive of the Welsh Ambulance Service, said: “We’re enormously proud to be taking home not one, but two much-coveted NHS Wales Awards.

“Rapid and effective pain relief for patients who’ve experienced trauma is an important part of making them more comfortable, so the introduction of Penthrox into our suite of pain-relieving drugs last year was a game-changer.

“Meanwhile, our efforts to improve the care we deliver to newborn babies with respect to thermoregulation has been commendable.

“Congratulations to colleagues on a much-deserved win.”

Judith Paget, Director General for Health, Social Care and Early Years and the NHS Wales Chief Executive, added: “Congratulations to the winners but also to everyone who has been shortlisted for an award today.

“The NHS Wales Awards are one of the highlights of my year.

“I take great pride in seeing the breadth of quality improvement projects underway across NHS Wales to transform our services for those that we care for.

“I hope that you are all deservedly proud of your achievements in these challenging times.”
