East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service appoints new Chief Fire Officer

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has appointed Mark Matthews as its new Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive.

East Sussex Fire Authority Chair, Cllr. Amanda Evans, said Mark, who is currently East Sussex’s serving Assistant Chief Fire Officer, was among “a very strong field of candidates who went through a robust and challenging process.”

In accepting the offer, Mark said: “I am extremely proud and privileged to have been afforded the opportunity to lead the Service I am so committed to. Working alongside the dedicated staff of ESFRS, in our united purpose to safeguard those we are entrusted to protect is a continuing honour.

“I would like to recognise our current Chief, Dawn Whittaker, whose unwavering contribution and brave leadership, both nationally and locally, has been an inspiration to many of us across the service and the sector.

“I intend to build on our strong history and, with support from colleagues and partners, continue to adapt to the needs of our communities to keep them safe.”

Mark will officially commence his new role on 1 January 2025 when current Chief Fire Officer, Dawn Whittaker retires.
