Mitie has secured a £170m contract with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to deliver planned and reactive engineering maintenance services across the entirety of its estate.

The four-year contract comes with the option of two further extensions worth two-years each.

MPS is the UK’s largest police service, with more than 46,000 colleagues across London. Through this new contract, a team of more than 200 Mitie colleagues will be responsible for the maintenance of the entire MPS estate, covering 209 sites across the capital.

Mitie will deliver specialist mechanical and electrical engineering services, including maintenance, checks, and upgrades across critical building infrastructure. This includes managing the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well electrical, water hygiene, fire and intruder alarm systems at a range of sites, from local police stations to corporate buildings and training centres. Mitie will also be responsible for the upkeep of other critical policing environments such as custody suites, 999 Contact Centres and Technical Equipment Rooms.

Sustainability-centric

Sustainability will play a central role throughout the contract, with Mitie deploying its Plan Zero experts to identify and deliver carbon cutting initiatives, supporting MPS in achieving its target of net-zero by 2030. As part of this, all Mitie mobile engineers travelling between MPS sites will be equipped with electric vehicles.

This is the first time that MPS has awarded the maintenance contract to a single provider covering North and South London, reflecting Mitie’s proven track record of delivering on a large regional scale, and building on its support of emergency services up and down the country. This includes providing a range of services across multiple NHS trusts, fire services, and in Police Custody Suites.

“The Met’s operational estate is one of the largest property portfolios in London. It includes police stations, patrol bases, marine and aviation facilities, as well as various back office and support buildings.

“The appointment of Mitie is part of an eight-year project aimed at maintaining and modernising our buildings, improving efficiency and delivering value for money. Collaboration, through this contract, will deliver innovation, real time information and greater efficiencies in the maintenance of the estate.

“Mitie is one of the leading suppliers within the facilities maintenance sector and we’re excited to work with them as we continue to deliver for the Met and for Londoners.”
