I had the opportunity to visit the Fire Service College (FSC) in Moreton-in-Marsh during its 50th anniversary celebrations, and it was a fantastic chance to see the College in action. The day brought together a sense of pride in the past and optimism for the future, as guests marked five decades of firefighter training and innovation.

Walking around the site, it was clear why the FSC has such a strong reputation. Its training facilities, from live-fire areas to complex urban scenarios, have played a crucial role in preparing generations of firefighters and emergency responders. The event brought together alumni, staff, and partners to mark the occasion, all proud to be part of the College’s story.

One of the day’s highlights was a visit from HRH The Princess Royal, who officially opened the new Immersive Skills Lab – a new addition to the College’s facilities that demonstrates its commitment to staying ahead in training innovation.

Since opening in 1974, the FSC has been a vital resource for the UK’s fire and rescue services. Located on a 300-acre site in the heart of the Cotswolds, the College has provided hands-on training for everyone from new recruits to senior officers. Its facilities have evolved over the years to meet the changing demands of emergency services, but its focus on practical, realistic training has remained constant.

The anniversary event offered a chance to reflect on this legacy. Guests explored the site, learning more about its history and its role in shaping fire and rescue services. The sense of pride among the FSC team was palpable, as was their determination to ensure the College remains at the forefront of firefighter training.

The Immersive Skills Lab

While much of the day celebrated the past, the opening of the Immersive Skills Lab highlighted how the FSC is looking ahead. The lab uses AI and virtual reality, with contributions from Flaim and RiVR, to create realistic training scenarios. These technologies allow firefighters to practice techniques in a safe and controlled environment, simulating incidents that mimic the unpredictability of real-world emergencies.

Unlike live-fire exercises, the lab’s VR technology eliminates safety risks and environmental concerns, offering a flexible and innovative way to complement traditional training methods. Firefighters can freely move within the virtual space, responding to simulated incidents that mimic the unpredictability of real-world emergencies.

“The opening of our new Immersive Skills Lab will enhance digital capabilities to ensure that learning and training remains world-leading at the College. Firefighters at all experience levels will be even better equipped to build the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to respond to a range of complex emergency situations and enhance their preparedness for high-risk incidents.”

Clair Mowbray, Director at The Fire Service College.

The lab’s development is part of Capita’s broader commitment to integrating technology into training and preparedness. While live-fire training remains a cornerstone of the FSC’s approach, this addition ensures the College stays ahead in meeting the needs of modern fire and rescue services.

As the Fire Service College marks its 50th anniversary, it’s clear that its role in firefighter training is as important today as it was when it first opened. The Immersive Skills Lab is just one example of how the FSC continues to innovate, combining its expertise with technology to prepare firefighters for the challenges ahead.
