Thames Valley Chief Constable suspended pending investigation

The Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police (TVP), Jason Hogg, has been suspended following an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation into allegations of potential gross misconduct.

Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber made the decision to suspend the chief on 16 January. The allegations relate to concerns that, between 2016 and 2020, he and another senior officer failed to properly investigate claims that a former senior TVP officer retained sensitive police information after leaving the force.

“As part of our independent investigation, which started in April 2023, the Chief Constable will be served with a notice of investigation for potential gross misconduct, relating to alleged breaches of the police standards of professional behaviour regarding honesty and integrity, and duties and responsibilities. A second senior TVP officer is under investigation for potential misconduct.

“This does not mean that disciplinary proceedings will necessarily follow. At the end of our investigation, we will decide whether any officers should face disciplinary proceedings. No criminal offences have been identified as part of this investigation.”

Steve Noonan, Director of Operations, IOPC.

Deputy Chief Constable Ben Snuggs will take on Chief Constable duties until a Temporary Chief Constable is appointed later this month.

The IOPC has also completed a separate investigation into the former senior TVP officer, with a file of evidence sent to the Crown Prosecution Service in December to consider possible charges under the Data Protection Act and for misconduct in public office.
