The Chief Constable of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, Scott Chilton, has retired with immediate effect, as it is confirmed he is under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for potential gross misconduct.

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones accepted the retirement following two mandatory referrals made to the IOPC about the Chief Constable.

In a statement earlier this week, the IOPC said the investigation relates to allegations that Mr Chilton may have breached police standards of professional behaviour. These include honesty and integrity, duties and responsibilities, discreditable conduct, and orders and instructions.

The investigation centres on claims that Mr Chilton failed to disclose conflicts of interest involving workplace relationships – one prior to his appointment as chief constable and a second during his time in the role. The initial referral was made on 27 February, with a further referral submitted on 31 March.

“On 7 April, we notified the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Chief Constable, Scott Chilton, that he is under investigation for potential gross misconduct.

“We understand that the chief constable has now retired from the force with immediate effect. This will not impact our investigation, which remains ongoing.”

Derrick Campbell, IOPC Director.

He added that no criminal offences have been identified at this stage, and that the serving of a gross misconduct notice does not necessarily mean disciplinary proceedings will follow.

The Police and Crime Commissioner has now started the process to recruit a new Chief Constable. In the interim, Deputy Chief Constable Sam de Reya has been appointed as Acting Chief Constable.
