Multi-agency Blue Light Hub gets new community mosaic

A new community mosaic has been unveiled at a collaborative hub in Milton Keynes which is home to the city’s police, ambulance and fire and rescue services.

The Blue Light Hub, which opened in June 2020, integrates Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service (BFRS) with Thames Valley Police (TVP) and South-Central Ambulance Service (SCAS), fostering greater collaboration between emergency services.

Work on the new community mosaic began in September 2024, with the aim of engaging the local community and creating a lasting legacy at the hub.

For the project, students from local schools began designing and creating drawings to be incorporated into the joint emergency services mosaic. The drawings ranged from a police helicopter to paramedics and specialist firefighting appliances. This initiative captured the students’ artistic talents and their community pride shines through. Once the designs were submitted, a selection panel confirmed which drawings could be integrated within the mosaic.

Sarah from Honey Mosaics then worked her magic to create the final piece that incorporated the selected designs from the children. The design was then brought to life by local children, volunteers and staff from local organisations and colleagues from the three emergency services by filling in the mosaic with coloured tiles.

The finished mosaic was unveiled by the Mayoress of Milton Keynes on 9 May, with members of the emergency services and local school children in attendance.

“This project has enabled me to give a creative opportunity to over 700 individuals, it has been an honour and a privilege to work with everyone throughout the project’s duration. Working with Danny Graham, West Ashland’s Station Commander it was clear from the outset that our values for bringing communities together aligned.

“I have had a huge amount of project partners working with me to deliver this project and I am so grateful for all the support I have been given and the huge efforts from so many individuals that have helped to make this project a huge success. I am so proud of all the children I have worked with, watching them learn and create with enthusiasm and pride.

“This mosaic has allowed me to use 26 young artists illustrations, the beautiful work is a true testament to their talent. This mosaic tells the story of our project and our community, a legacy piece that shows what happens we work together with creativity at the heart of our work.”
