The fire community is mourning the loss of two colleagues who tragically died attending a major incident in Bicester on the evening of 15 May.

Firefighters Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler both died in the line of duty during the blaze at Bicester Motion in Oxfordshire. A member of the public, David Chester, also sadly died as a result of the fire.

Both firefighters were from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue service and Martyn Sadler also worked as a firefighter for London Fire Brigade.

A total of ten fire crews attended the incident on Thursday evening at the classic car restoration hub. The fire is reportedly now under control, with no visible flames. However, fire crews remain on site ‘dampening down’ small pockets of smoke and heat.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we report the loss of two firefighters Jennie and Martyn. Their families have been informed and are being supported by myself and the wider service. Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times and we ask for their privacy to be respected.

“We cannot release any details at present but will provide further information as soon as we can.”

Rob MacDougall, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer.

Thames Valley Police has commenced an unexplained death investigation, led by its Major Crime Team. At present, the investigation is not criminal in nature, but the force said it will follow the evidence as its enquiries continue. Officers will remain at the scene for a number of days to ensure the public remain safe.

Commenting on the incident, London Fire Commissioner, Andy Roe said: “We are devastated by the loss of our colleague and friend.

“This is clearly an incredibly difficult time for us all; we have lost a well-respected and much-loved colleague who exemplified courage and selflessness in the service of others.

“Our thoughts are with all the families, friends, and colleagues impacted by this tragedy. We are doing everything we can to provide support to Martyn’s family and colleagues.”

“I am devastated by the news that two firefighters have lost their lives responding to a major incident in Bicester on Thursday evening. I am also deeply saddened that a member of the public has also died in the incident.

“Our firefighters are the very best of us, their courage and compassion is what make them so very special.

“My thoughts are with their families, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time.”

Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, Phil Garrigan.

Steve Wright, Fire Brigades Union general secretary, said: “On behalf of the Fire Brigades Union, I send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler.

“Jennie and Martyn died in the line of duty protecting their community. They were both well-loved and widely respected. We are proud that they were members of our union.”
