Bright lights recognised at national fire awards

Sophie Green, winner of Bright Light Award at WFS awards.

Women in the Fire Service has announced the winners of its prestigious awards where it recognises each nominee for their exceptional dedication to their service, their teams, and the communities they support.

With over 70 nominations for the awards that include ones for outstanding team, rising star and the Dany Cotton Inspiring Leader award, Women in the Fire Service Chair Jules King said it it had been “incredibly hard” to choose the winners.

“I would like to congratulate every single nominee for what they have achieved and also sincere thanks to all the nominators for taking the time and highlighting the great work that is being done up and down the Country – without you these achievements would not be recognised, shared or celebrated.”

Emergency Services Times is delighted to support the awards and once again sponsored the Bright Light award which has this year gone to Sophie Green from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Sophie has spent the past three decades in the fire and rescue service and said receiving this award made her “so proud” of all she had achieved in West Yorkshire.

“As a trainee firefighter joining the service in January 1994 to now a Station Manager over 30 years later. I would like to thank all the amazing women I work with who have always believed in me, shared my vision and joined me on my journey through the highs and lows. I would like you all to remember you inspire me every day to be the best version of myself.”

Congratulations to Sophie and to Nimah Kenny from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service who was a worthy runner up in this category as well as all the other winners of this year’s Women in the Fire Service Awards.

The awards are given out at the annual training and development event hosted at the Fire Service College on 21 June.
