Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) will install 19 new electric vehicle (EV) charge points across several of its sites after securing more than £300,000 through a national NHS decarbonisation scheme.

The £8m NHS Chargepoint Accelerator programme, announced by the Department for Transport and the Department for Health and Social Care, is funded by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. It will support chargepoint installations at 62 NHS Trusts and around 224 sites to accelerate the shift to cleaner fleets.

YAS already has 117 chargepoints in place. The new investment of £308,600 will help the Trust build on that foundation, supporting its ongoing efforts to cut emissions and reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

“We’re delighted that YAS has been awarded funding for a further 19 electrical vehicle charge points at a number of our sites. This is another step forward in the Trust’s commitment to reducing the impact of our service on the environment, and our continuing efforts to progress towards net zero.”

Glen Adams, Director of Fleet and Estates at Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Across the NHS, the investment is expected to save around £130m in fuel and maintenance costs over the next 25 years, with payback forecast in just four years. Additional social benefits from reduced air pollution and emissions are estimated at £93m.

Chris Gormley, NHS Chief Sustainability Officer, said: “This investment will help Trusts save money, reduce emissions and improve air quality – all while continuing to deliver high-quality patient care.”
