The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has taken on the role of Chair of the county’s Road Safety Partnership, the Vision Zero Board, while announcing a £20,000 boost for new community-led projects.

PCC Darryl Preston, who brings four decades of policing and governance experience to the role, formally assumed the position at the Partnership’s Board meeting on 29 September. Alongside his appointment, details were confirmed of a new Road Safety Fund, which will distribute small grants of up to £3,500 to support schemes tackling local road safety concerns. Funding will be available until March 2026.

The Vision Zero Partnership brings together statutory and non-statutory agencies with the shared ambition of eliminating road deaths in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and reducing the severity of injuries caused by collisions.

Speaking after the announcement, Preston said the move reflected his determination to improve road safety across the county.

“There are still far too many people killed or seriously injured on our roads,” he said. “The consequences of reckless or poor driving can be devastating for victims, families and communities. As a former police officer, I have witnessed the trauma and heartache first-hand – experiences that drive my passion to make a difference.”

He added that improving safety was a shared responsibility: “We must do everything possible to reduce the risks and hold drivers accountable for their behaviour behind the wheel. Together we will make our roads safer for all.”

Since being elected in 2021, Preston has made road safety a central focus, committing investment in education, enforcement, and community-led initiatives. This has included funding a Community Speed Watch Coordinator to oversee more than 100 volunteer groups across the county, with 11 new groups launching since April this year.

The PCC has also backed preventative work through a Casualty Reduction Police Officer post and confirmed ongoing support for three fleet vehicles used by the Vision Zero Specials Team, which target speeding hotspots and deliver safety awareness campaigns.

The first project to benefit from the new Road Safety Fund will be the promotion of BikeSafe workshops, aimed at encouraging motorcyclists—particularly younger riders—to progress to advanced training. Run by police motorcyclists, the workshops are designed to reduce risks for one of the most vulnerable groups of road users.
