The Fire Service College is using new tech from Dräger to simulate wildfire scenarios as part of its wildfire training offer.

The training tool developed by the Engineered Solutions division of Dräger uses real maps and satellite images to allow for multiple scenarios of fire propagation to be realistically demonstrated, based on internationally recognised wildfire calculation models. The Fire Service College, said that the Dräger Wildland-Fire Sandbox (WFS 1000) is ‘highly intuitive’ and is used to to enhance the theoretical and tactical training required to tackle wildfires.

Noting the high levels of wildfires in 2025, the Fire Service College said that tool, made up of multiple components including a depth camera, projector and sandbox, is used to accurately predict fire propagation against numerous simulation parameters, taking into consideration weather conditions, terrain and tactics employed to extinguish the fire.

Pippa Steele is Head of Teaching, Learning and Digital at the Fire Service College and said that the tool allows for a fully immersive learning experience. “As a result, we have been able to develop a course that brings theory to life and delivers interactive training to firefighters that is transferable to real-world experiences.”

Remarking on the announcement by the Fire Service College, Thomas Pearson, Marketing Manager (Industry) Breathing Systems & Engineered Solutions at Dräger said its engineering experts have been able to deliver a training tool unlike any other in the UK, adding: “our solution will enhance the authentic training of firefighters by bringing wildfire incidents to life without putting any firefighters at risk.
