Preparing responders for the pressures of modern emergency care

Frontline emergency care is being delivered under growing pressure. Ambulance services, fire and rescue teams, police responders and voluntary organisations are dealing with rising demand, more complex incidents and faster-moving risks, often in environments where decisions made in minutes can determine patient outcomes.

At The Emergency Services Show 2026, taking place on 16-17 September at Birmingham NEC, ‘Lifesaving on the Frontline’ is one of four key themes that will shape the programme and explore how services are adapting to meet these challenges.

Major trauma, cardiac arrest, flooding and water rescue incidents and the growing challenge of lithium-ion battery fires are placing new demands on responders. These incidents require not only clinical expertise, but effective coordination between services, reliable equipment and technology and the ability to make informed decisions in unpredictable, high-risk situations.

“As we look ahead to The Emergency Services Show 2026, it’s clear that unprecedented demand is reshaping trauma response, pre-hospital care and emergency medicine. Ambulance services are operating at their busiest levels, with crews feeling that pressure year-round, yet they continue to innovate, adapt and work with partners to keep patients safe despite handover delays and rising violence.

“The challenges are significant, but so too is the determination across our services to strengthen resilience and drive improvement, powered by frontline insight and new clinical, digital and operational innovations.”

Anna Parry, Managing Director, Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE).

Lifesaving on the Frontline brings these challenges into focus at The Emergency Services Show 2026, examining how emergency services are adapting to deliver safe, effective care before patients reach hospital. The theme will explore the practical realities of pre-hospital care and emergency medicine, with an emphasis on joined-up working, interoperability and the tools that support faster, safer decision-making.

Returning this year, the Protecting the Protectors stage will showcase how advances in equipment, training and digital tools are supporting frontline responders and enhancing patient outcomes. Content will reflect real-world operational experience, from advances in diagnostics and trauma care to simulation and interoperable platforms that link frontline and clinical systems.

This theme is aimed at those delivering lifesaving care at the sharp end of response, including ambulance service clinical leads and paramedics, fire and rescue incident commanders and trauma technicians, police first responders and tactical medics, as well as specialists from mountain rescue, the coastguard and the voluntary sector.

Lifesaving on the Frontline offers an opportunity for suppliers to demonstrate technologies and solutions that make a tangible difference in trauma response, pre-hospital care and responder safety. “Incidents attended by the emergency services and other partner agencies are becoming more complex due to a range of factors physical and otherwise. JESIP methodology becomes even more important in these incidents where effective and clear communication, risk and hazard awareness and understanding of other service capabilities must be taken into account in order to safely resolve the challenge presented to all who will respond.

“The JOL system is constantly receiving examples where these have worked to good effect and our take home message to all is that the use of JESIP is a vital aspect in the response to any incident being dealt with by more than one agency.”

Matthew England, National Strategic JESIP Manager.

By focusing on real-world operational challenges and emerging risks, Lifesaving on the Frontline will provide practical insight into how emergency services can continue to save lives and protect those responding on the frontline.

Further details on sessions and contributors will be announced soon.
