The chief executive of the Police Federation of England & Wales (PFEW) has been suspended after being arrested as part of an ongoing fraud investigation led by City of London Police.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Federation confirmed that Mukund Krishna had been suspended from his role while inquiries continue.

A man understood to be Mr Krishna, 46, was arrested on 4 march on suspicion of fraud by abuse of position. Two other men – a 51-year-old from Wales and a 55-year-old from Bristol – were also arrested on the same charge. Both are understood to have current or former senior connections to the federation.

All three men have since been interviewed and released on conditional bail while the investigation continues.

City of London Police said its domestic corruption unit has been investigating allegations of fraud linked to the national Police Federation organisation for the past year.

As part of the inquiry, officers carried out search warrants at locations across Wales, Somerset, London and Surrey.

Detective Superintendent James Halkett, who is leading the investigation, said:

“The City of London Police domestic corruption unit are leading a criminal investigation into allegations of fraud made against three individuals connected to the national Police Federation of England and Wales.

“A 46-year-old man from Surrey, a 51-year-old man from Wales and a 55-year-old man from Bristol were all arrested on suspicion of fraud by abuse of position.

“This is a complex and active investigation in which we are pursuing all lines of inquiry.”

The Police Federation, which represents more than 145,000 rank-and-file police officers in England and Wales up to the rank of chief inspector, said it is cooperating fully with the investigation.

A spokesperson previously confirmed the organisation was aware of the arrests but declined to comment further because the matter is ongoing.

“Our focus remains on continuing the work of the federation and representing our members across England and Wales,” the spokesperson said.

The Police Federation acts as the staff association for rank-and-file officers, providing representation and support on professional, legal and welfare issues.

No charges have been brought and the investigation remains ongoing.
