Wayne began his career as a firefighter in Staffordshire in 1992, working initially in Stoke-on-Trent. He moved to Moorlands and from there to Stafford as a Station Officer, before spending time back at Stoke-on-Trent and at HQ where he developed the Integrated Risk Management Plan. Following that, he spent a year working from Stoke City Council as a strategic coordinator across the fire, police, health and local authority partnership to improve joint achievements for the community.
Wayne became Area Commander for Stoke-on-Trent and was responsible for all aspects of service delivery and, after the amalgamation of three areas, became Area Commander responsible for North Staffordshire. During this time he also jointly led a Business Transformation Team identifying service improvement and efficiency options.
In March 2012, Wayne moved to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service where he took up responsibility for training, organisational safety and operational assurance and was a director of the Red One trading arm.
