A team of search and rescue specialists has been deployed to Morocco to assist with Moroccan led rescue efforts. The government of Morocco accepted the UK offer for assistance following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake which has resulted in the deaths of more than 2,000 people.
The team comprises search and rescue specialists, including 60 people, four search dogs and rescue equipment, as well as a medical assessment team.
UK International Search and Rescue team was deployed through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Offie and comprises staff from 14 fire and rescue services. UKISAR is part of the National Fire Chiefs Council’s National Resilience Work and is on permanent standby to mobilise and assist when requested by disaster-affected countries.
National Fire Chiefs Council Chair, Mark Hardingham said, “The thoughts of the UK’s fire and rescue services are with all those affected by the devastating earthquake in Morocco. The UK team will be providing specialist technical support where it is needed most to save lives and support local emergency service teams.”
The British Red Cross has launched a Morocco Earthquake Appeal. The local Moroccan Red Crescent are on the ground responding to the earthquake, including providing first aid to those injured and emotional support to people in shock.
