Flood hit communities to get financial help to recover from Storm Henk

The government announced that communities that suffered from ‘exceptional localised flooding’ could apply for a scheme to get them quickly back on their feet.

The measures set out in the Flood Recovery Framework mean that help will be available for flooded households and businesses who can get £500 cash and council/business tax relief for three months. More via Emergency Services Times

BT Group pilot powers up first EV charger repurposed from street cabinet

Etc., the startup and digital incubation arm at BT Group, today announces that it will power up its first EV charging unit built from a street cabinet traditionally used to store broadband and phone cabling.

The announcement marks the first step in the rollout of new technical trials, exploring the potential to upgrade up to 60,000 cabinets to help meet government sustainability targets and decarbonise the transport system in the UK. More via BT Group

Firefighters call for government to fund emergency flood response in wake of Storm Henk

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is calling for urgent resources for the fire service in the wake of flooding caused by Storm Henk.

Large areas of England have been left devastated by widespread flooding, with firefighters responding to emergency calls, performing rescues and evacuations. More via FBU

Dog and owners rescued after spending 11 hours overnight on Scafell Pike

A Lake District mountain rescue team was called out after two walkers and their dog failed to return from a walk on Scafell.

Due to the weather conditions, and potential for hypothermia, a full callout was made and additional support from Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team and Lake District Search Dogs. More via Cumbria Crack

Head of Britain’s police chiefs says force ‘institutionally racist’

The leader of Britain’s police chiefs’ organisation has become the most senior serving leader to say that policing is institutionally racist, as he called for a fundamental redesign of national policies and practices to eliminate discrimination.

Gavin Stephens, the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), said black people should no longer experience disproportionate use of force, and that too little progress had been made to reform policing, with some leaders slow to accept the size of the challenge. More via The Guardian

Scots urged to help identify those most at risk from house fires

Scottish communities are being asked to pull together to save vulnerable people from potential house fires, as the number of people who’ve died as a result of a house fire in the last 12 months hit 42.

To help tackle this threat, friends and family of people thought to be most at risk of fatal house fires are being encouraged to alert the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. More via ITV.com
