The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has released its Impact Report 2023/24, which outlines the watchdog’s impact on the public and policing across England and Wales.

The report includes feedback from people the IOPC has supported through the police complaints system and contains examples of how the watchdog has worked with communities and groups to raise awareness of its work.

Rachel Watson, Director General of the IOPC, notes in the report’s foreword that ‘there is more to do’ following an independent review of the IOPC commissioned by the Cabinet Office, first published in March 2023 and updated in March 2024. One of the review’s findings was that ‘IOPC staff often perform admirably despite, rather than because of, the systems and structures that should support them.’

The sixth annual Impact Report highlights, among other things, how the IOPC:

  • Completed 83% of core independent investigations within 12 months
  • Handled almost 60,000 calls and emails to its customer contact centre
  • Conducted 240 community engagement activities
  • Completed 3,157 reviews
