From information overload to intelligent response

The current reality of UK policing is clear. Demand keeps rising, resources remain stretched, public trust is under pressure, and every decision faces scrutiny. In that environment, technology must help people make better decisions faster, without adding complexity or noise.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rightly attracting attention across policing, but many forces are still wrestling with the basics. While call handlers juggle multiple systems, supervisors are trying to piece together an incident picture from scattered sources, leaving officers to arrive on scene with incomplete information and making them less prepared to respond effectively.

Fixing this does not always require a technological leap. It begins with better workflow, interoperability and practical design.

Control rooms already hold building blocks for intelligent automation. Call logs, caller history, location data, officer availability, previous incident types and risk indicators all exist today. When these streams are connected and displayed through clear, visual dashboards, decision making improves instantly. Dispatchers can see real time activity, identify risk factors and act decisively. Supervisors gain the full operational picture at a glance, helping them manage resources more effectively. That visibility is the foundation for confident use of AI driven insights later.

Interoperability underpins it all. Every time staff rekey data or chase details that exist elsewhere, efficiency drops. Open interfaces, consistent data models and event driven exchanges might not sound glamorous, but they deliver daily gains. The goal is a single, trusted operational picture, not another layer of complexity. When control rooms can avoid even one manual step per incident, the time saved across a year is considerable.

AI can enhance this further by adding targeted decision support, but it should act as an assistant, not a replacement. AI can highlight risk factors for call takers, flag anomalies for supervisors, suggest optimal resource allocation, or even help prioritise digital evidence. Each of these uses reduces cognitive load while keeping humans firmly in control. That is how confidence and accountability grow together.

Success also depends on measuring what really matters. Many programmes still focus on technology outputs instead of operational outcomes. The right metrics are clear: time to first meaningful contact, average dispatch time, how often officers get the full story, and timeliness of police updates. These metrics connect technology directly to performance in the field.

The path ahead is both practical and optimistic: connect your data. Visualise it clearly. Simplify workflows. Add targeted decision support where it counts. Measure the outcomes that matter.

By doing this, UK police forces can raise performance today while preparing for a future built on responsible automation and AI. This is not about chasing trends; it is about using technology, including visual dashboards and AI, to make policing more effective.
