Fire service rolls out body-worn video cameras

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) has begun issuing body-worn video cameras to frontline crews as part of a major new initiative aimed at improving safety, transparency and accountability.

The rollout follows a successful trial in late 2024 and will be used across operational teams including firefighters, senior officers and fire safety inspectors.

The service has invested in 60 Motorola V500 cameras, which record both audio and visual footage. They will be used during incident response, investigations and when gathering or sharing evidential information.

NFRS said the rollout comes against a backdrop of rising attacks on emergency workers nationwide. According to Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government data, 967 attacks on firefighters were recorded during operational incidents in England between 2023 and 2024.

Group Manager Chris Emmott said the cameras would play a vital role in protecting staff after a number of incidents in recent years, particularly during high-demand periods such as bonfire night.

“Sadly, we’ve seen attacks on our staff and vehicles over the years,” he said. “These cameras are a step forward in protecting our teams and the public, and they will also help us learn from incidents and promote good practice across the organisation.”

The service emphasised that the cameras are being introduced with the dual purpose of safeguarding firefighters and enhancing public confidence.

“We would like to reassure the communities of Nottinghamshire that these cameras have been implemented across the Service to protect both our staff and the public,” Emmott added. “If you see a member of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service staff wearing a body-worn camera, please don’t be alarmed – ultimately it’s there to protect everyone involved.”

The devices will be worn overtly, and staff will inform the public when recording is underway. All footage will be stored and managed in line with data protection legislation and the Service’s new Body-Worn Video Camera Policy and Procedure.
