As part of Humberside Police‘s latest inspection, the force has been rated Outstanding for its work in preventing and deterring crime but needs to do more work when it comes to safeguarding children and adults.

His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) carried out its latest PEEL inspection of the force and found innovative practice in the way it manages problem-solving through a new platform and a portal for partner organisations. At the time of the inspection, the force was in the final stages of setting up a new single problem-solving platform on its Niche system using national funding aimed at bringing more consistency, clarity and ease of access for partner organisations to contribute to problem-solving.

Elsewhere in the report, the inspectors found innovation in its use of AI. The force is developing the use of an artificial intelligence process to assist with initial risk assessments using funding from the National Police Chiefs’ Council. This process is taking place in the control room, working alongside call handlers, “it is designed to help with their recording of risk assessments at the point of contact while they interact with the caller.”

In the safeguarding area, the inspectors set out four areas of improvement around its governance processes and data analysis, as well as how it records crimes against vulnerable victims. Risk assessment and disclosure processes are also highlighted as requiring more work to be effective.

Responding to the report, Chief Constable Chris Todd said that he is “immensely proud of his officers and staff” and recognising that the force has some of the fastest call answer times in the country, added “there is still more to do.” He noted the call times in his open letter to the Police and Crime Commissioner published ahead of the inspection report where he set out his achievements during his first year in office.
