Staffordshire Police has launched a pilot apprenticeship scheme aimed at helping staff develop practical skills in the use of artificial intelligence across the force.

The initiative, delivered in partnership with Multiverse, involves 15 members of staff selected from across the organisation based on their roles and responsibilities. It is designed to improve understanding of AI technology and explore how data-driven tools can support existing ways of working, improve processes and increase efficiency.

John Bowler, the force’s director of digital, data and technology, said the pilot was focused on ensuring AI is used “safely, responsibly and in ways that genuinely add value”.

“From creating simple AI tools to support everyday tasks such as drafting and responding to emails, to helping teams deliver complex processes more effectively, this will be another practical tool in the toolbox for our people – both now and moving forward.

“By developing these skills in a safe, structured and ethical way, we can share knowledge and build confidence across the force, strengthening our data and digital capability and helping to build a workforce that is ready for the future.”

The apprenticeship scheme is being supported through Department for Education Apprenticeship Levy funding, meaning there is no additional cost to the force.

Rebecca Crellin, apprenticeship manager at Staffordshire Police, said there had been “significant interest” in the pilot and suggested there could be opportunities to expand the programme in future.

Gary Eimerman, chief learning officer at Multiverse, said AI had the potential to help policing “automate administrative burdens and unlock deeper insights from data”.

He added: “By equipping these 15 pioneers with the ability to build and deploy AI tools responsibly, we are ensuring the force remains agile and effective in a digital-first world.”
