Following an extensive and rigorous process, which attracted a number of extremely high-calibre candidates, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has concluded its search for the service’s next Deputy Chief Fire Officer.

The successful candidate is Mark Arkwell, who has been performing the role on a temporary basis since January 2021. Mark’s appointment was ratified by the Royal Berkshire Fire Authority on 5 January.

Wayne Bowcock, Chief Fire Officer, said, “I would like to congratulate Mark on his appointment as Deputy Chief Fire Officer. He has an outstanding record and will be focused on continuing to provide the best possible service to the people of Royal Berkshire.

“With more than 22 years’ of service in Surrey and Royal Berkshire, Mark has a wealth of experience and skill and will be well placed to lead the service on the next stage on its journey of continuous improvement.”

On accepting the position, Mark said, “I am proud and honoured to get the opportunity to be Royal Berkshire’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer. It is a privilege to work alongside so many exceptional colleagues and fire authority members and I am looking forward to continuing to improve our service for the benefit of the people of Royal Berkshire.”
