UK faces heightened wildfire threats as climate change intensifies, new report warns

A recent report from the UK parliament has raised concerns about the increasing wildfire threat in the UK, pointing to climate change and changes in land use patterns as key factors. These findings highlight the important need for taking steps to reduce risks and protect communities and ecosystems.

Entitled ‘Wildfire Risks to UK Landscapes‘, the report highlights how climate change is amplifying the frequency and severity of wildfires globally. With forecasts suggesting more dangerous fire conditions in future climate scenarios, the UK is also at risk.

Highlighting climate change’s anticipated impacts, the findings detail how milder, wetter winters will promote vegetation growth, followed by hotter, drier springs and summers, heightening wildfire risks.

According to Met Office models, there’s a significant increase in days conducive to fire occurrence, posing considerable challenges for fire management agencies and communities. There’s an urgent need for a customised fire danger rating system tailored to the UK’s diverse fuel types.

While other nations have implemented these systems, the UK currently relies on adapted indices that may overlook local conditions. However, recent academic research has made progress in developing a more precise hazard alert system, signaling advancements in both wildfire risk assessment and communication.

Additionally, it highlights the importance of stakeholders, including fire and rescue services, land managers and government agencies, collaborating to enhance wildfire preparedness and response efforts. Active engagement with land managers can offer insights and resources for both suppressing and preventing wildfires.

“Fire and rescue practitioners suggest that further collaboration with land managers and investment in training and equipment would strengthen the capacity of FRS to respond to evolving wildfire threats.”

In September 2023, Guillermo Rein spoke to Emergency Services Times about the need to increase the pace of change to respond to the growing risk of wildfires in the UK.

As the wildfire threat grows more imminent in the UK, action is needed to tackle the root causes driving these risks head-on. By prioritising climate resilience, implementing robust risk assessment systems and fostering cross-sector collaboration, the UK can better equip itself to confront the challenges ahead.

Preparing for: wildfire season, it’s not just a fire problem

Join our upcoming webinar on 9 May to get ahead of wildfire season and learn why tackling wildfires is about more than just fire safety – it’s about safeguarding your community.

Key topics:

  • Understand wildfire dynamics, including how they start, spread, and the factors that influence their behaviour.
  • Explore proactive measures communities can take to stay safe, from creating defensible spaces around homes to implementing evacuation plans.
  • Examine the broader environmental consequences of wildfires and discover strategies to build resilience in natural ecosystems post-fire.
