Emergency services bosses have hailed a new formal partnership that involves paramedic students training alongside firefighters to expose them to realistic scenarios and build understanding between 999 responders. And the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) has launched a new campaign that aims to foster a culture that positively addresses mental health and wellbeing within the police force.

Firefighters support paramedic students in new 999 partnership

Emergency service bosses have hailed a new partnership which sees trainee paramedics train alongside firefighters.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue regularly welcomes Sheffield Hallam University paramedic students to training drills in a bid to expose students to realistic scenarios and build understanding between 999 responders. More via Emergency Services Times

Ambulance service tackling misogyny, says chief

Work is ongoing to tackle “pockets of poor behaviour” amongst Wales Ambulance Service staff, including on misogyny and sexual safety, its chief executive has said.

Jason Killens said there was “a lot of work underway to modify that behaviour” after an external review found “some challenges in some of our workplaces”.

He said it was a “good thing in the short term” that staff were raising more concerns about workplace behaviour. More via BBC News

Force needs to improve how it manages risk in custody, says inspectorate

A police force in England needs to improve how it manages risk in custody to keep detainees safe, the inspectorate has said.

Following an inspection of Avon and Somerset Police’s custody facilities by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in January 2024, the inspectorate raised a cause for concern about limitations to how the force identifies and manages risk. Drivers could be fined £2,500 for moving out of the way of an ambulance

Motorists have been cautioned that they could be slapped with a hefty £2,500 fine and even lose their driving privileges for making way for an ambulance.

According to motoring experts at LeaseCar.uk, drivers in the UK could find themselves on the wrong side of the law if they fail to adhere to traffic regulations while allowing emergency vehicles to pass. More via Daily Express

PFEW launches new mental health and wellbeing campaign #AskTwice

The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) has launched a new campaign that aims to foster a culture that positively addresses mental health and wellbeing within the police force, marking a pivotal step in reshaping workplace attitudes and practices.

PFEW wellbeing leads, Hayley Aley and Paul Williams, launched the #AskTwice campaign on World Mental Health Awareness Day, 15 May 2024, outlining that the campaign seeks to be a beacon of change, encouraging officers to pause, reflect, and prioritise their wellbeing and that of their colleagues. Force equipped with mobile defibrillators thanks to multi-agency collaboration

Cheshire Constabulary‘s Rural Crime Team has been supplied with five brand new mobile defibrillators from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) in an effort to help those in need of medical attention in Cheshire’s green spaces. More via Emergency Services Times
