Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service moved a step further towards its goal of being carbon neutral by 2045 with the official opening of a new green fire station in Crewe.

This community fire station is home to two fire engines and a specialist vehicle and provides a modern working environment for the crews as well as providing space to engage with local residents. It has been designed to what the service called, ‘exacting environmental standards,’ which means it achieves zero carbon status for its energy use.

Opened earlier this month by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, Lady Alexis Redmond MBE, the £7m carbon neutral building has been built by construction company ISG, who have worked on other fire station projects for the service.

“The new station is a fantastic asset to the community of Crewe. The facilities within the building deliver a better working environment for firefighters and staff, provide up-to-date training facilities and a newly refurbished, dedicated space for engaging with the local groups.”

Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive, Alex Waller.

The chair of Cheshire Fire Authority said that the service was investing ‘a significant amount’ of money to update its fire stations to make them ‘more sustainable, environmentally friendly and cost effective.’

While the construction took place, the crews operated out of a temporary fire station and have been using this new building since late 2023 ahead of the official opening earlier this month.
