In the first of a series focused on the run up to the general election, we look at the Liberal Democrat manifesto and find it sorely lacking policy about fire but has plenty to say about police and ambulance provision. And in the world of technology, the National Police Chiefs’ Council has teamed up with academics to put out new guidance on how to use AI safely in policing.

Lib Dems set out plans for police and ambulance

For a Fair Deal is the name of the newly published manifesto from the Liberal Democrats. With plenty of policy ideas for policing, including scrapping Police and Crime Commissioners and some ideas about improving ambulance handover delays, there is no mention of fire or any other parts of the emergency service world. Two patients a week given blood by Thames Valley Air Ambulance crews

Ahead of World Blood Donor Day on 14 June, the air ambulance charity covering the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire says that in the last year they have given blood to 96 patients in its care. Thames Valley Air Ambulance is the second Helicopter Emergency Medical Service unit in the country to carry blood on board. More via Thames Valley Air Ambulance

Amputee firefighter retires after 30 years

A firefighter from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, who was the first amputee to return to active duty after suffering severe injuries during a motorcycle crash, has retired after 30 years service. The accident in 2004 left Simon Hawkins with severe injuries on his lower left leg and he was forced to have it amputated. More via Bromsgrove Advertiser

Met issues record number of football banning orders

The Metropolitan Police says that during the last football season it issued 197 football banning orders, the largest number in its history. The bans are imposed to ensure matches in London are safe for other supporters attending and to minimise disorder in local communities during matchday. More via Met Police

Devon and Somerset Fire announces changes to leadership

Gavin Ellis has been confirmed as Chief Fire Officer for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. He had filled the role on an interim basis for the past year. The Fire Authority also elected a new chair. More via Emergency Services Times

New guidance for police use of AI

A new resource is now available for police forces looking to use artificial intelligence approaches in their work. with the publication of the Machine Learning Guide for Policing which is supported by the National Police Chiefs’ Council. More via Emergency Services Times
