Tougher vetting of firefighters being considered by government amid culture crisis

The fire minister has told ITV News that the government is looking at tougher vetting of firefighters in order to “change the culture” of services across the country.

Chris Philp’s comments follow several ITV News reports into fire services where claims of rape, sexual harassment and bullying of women are said to have been overlooked. More via ITVx

‘Health MOTs’ planned for people aged 65 and over arriving at A&E in England

People aged 65 and over arriving at A&E in England who appear frail will soon receive a “health MOT at the front door”, the head of the NHS will pledge.

A&E units must start giving everyone that age a battery of tests to see if they are frail or have any other underlying condition and then arrange whatever care they may need. More via The Guardian

NFCC welcomes the publication of new Fire Standard

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has welcomed the publication of the seventeenth professional Fire Standard; Internal Governance and Assurance, which will “support all fire and rescue services to follow a consistent and robust process when developing internal governance and assurance procedures.” More via NFCC

JLR invests more than £1m to support UK police in tackling vehicle thefts

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is investing more than £1m in support of proactive policing to tackle the organised crime groups targeting vehicles in the UK.

The commitment is part of an unprecedented security programme to support owners by tackling the issue at source. More via JLR

APCC launches guidance on preventing deaths in custody

The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC) has published guidance to support the prevention of deaths which occur in police custody and apparent suicides shortly following release.

The guidance provides useful advice, recommendations, and case studies that, where possible, are supported by evaluation and evidence, in addition to gathering helpful resources and information into one convenient document. More via APCC
