King's Birthday Honours

Andy Marsh, CEO of the College of Policing and former Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police has received a knighthood in this year’s honours marking the King’s birthday. Sir Andy has a long career in policing, starting as a police constable in 1987 and working in Wiltshire and Hampshire Police prior to 2016 when he became chief in Avon and Somerset. He joined the College of Policing in 2021.

“I was humbled to receive this prestigious honour, which I accept as a tribute to the hard work of the many dedicated officers and police staff I have been fortunate to serve alongside in two forces and at the College of Policing.

“I hope this honour will inspire others who are considering a career in policing or have recently joined. They will see my journey and appreciate the tremendous opportunity which policing can offer everyone in the Service, as well as the difference we can all make to the communities we serve.”

The King’s Birthday Honours, announced by the Cabinet Office on 14 June, include 22 new holders of the King’s Police Medal drawn from forces across the UK, Cyprus and the Cayman Islands.

In the fire and rescue service, three Chief Fire Officers received the King’s Fire Service Medal: Rob Barber from Staffordshire, Sabrina Cohen-Hatton from West Sussex and Roger Thomas from Mid and West Wales.

The King’s Ambulance Medal was awarded to recipients in five services including East of England, Yorkshire, Wales, Northern Ireland and Guernsey.

Elsewhere in the list, many people working in emergency services received MBEs, including Paul Murphy from Merseyside who is recognised for his work to help deploy equipment to the war in the Ukraine and Professor Rowena Hill from Nottingham Trent University who is well known in the fire world and was recognised here for her work leading the Covid-19 National Foresight Group.
