MSA Safety’s solution for a changing world

In a world that is believed to be impacted by climate change and inhabited by a growing population, solutions are evolving to help safeguard those at the frontline of increasingly diverse rescue missions.

Innovations in rescue clothing for first responders and firefighters are focused on enabling efficient and effective response to new challenges: earthquakes in heavily populated urban areas, year-round wildland fire breakouts, extreme rainfall and flash flooding, electric vehicle fires, and sharper attention to potential risks from contamination and exposure to pollutants are all part of modern-day life.

Innovative solutions for modern fire and rescue challenges

Faced with complex and unpredictable scenarios at a time when building fires only account for 6.6% of incidents attended by fire and rescue services, moving beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to the design and development of protective rescue clothing can enhance operational effectiveness.

Duty-specific clothing tailored to different body types, engineered with the latest technology to combine innovative materials and components, heralds the next generation of protective clothing to help first responders and firefighters perform their roles with adequate protection, comfort and peace of mind.

The MSA Bristol X4 TRW-Hybrid Suit

The MSA Bristol X4 TRW-Hybrid (Technical Rescue Wildland Hybrid) suit is a versatile and lightweight suit manufactured in male and female designs. It can be converted from technical rescue to wildland fire interventions by zipping the moisture barrier in or out.

A removable GORE-TEX Crosstech Flameliner provides water resistance, breathability and protection from blood-borne pathogens, whilst the 50mm Heatseal segmented triple trim reflective is breathable, flexible and has a tested durability of up to 50 washes.

It is a pre-emptive solution suitable for many rescue missions arising from natural disasters such as floods, tornados, heatwaves and extreme rainfall, as well as many emerging hazards such as electric car accidents where there are arc flash risks.

The MSA Bristol X4 Wildland Garment

Designed to address the need for enhanced protection during long-lasting interventions in high-temperature environments, the MSA Bristol X4 Wildland duty-specific garment is a single-layer lightweight solution with underarm gussets for improved sweat and heat transfer, enabling firefighters to act with agility and comfort.

Made with Lenzing FR and aramid blend fabric, with the 50mm Heatseal segmented triple trim, the MSA Bristol X4 Wildland garment is also made with double bottom layer reinforcements to provide enhanced durability in environments with rugged vegetation.

Ongoing research into emerging technologies and collaboration with best-in-class, trusted partners means that duty-specific safety solutions are continuously being developed for different professions in an evolving world.

Advancements in protective fabrics and technologies

For specialised incident response teams, W.L. Gore & Associates has developed lightweight, high visibility, breathable, waterproof technical rescue fabric that combines flame resistance, viral, pathogen and chemical protection with stretch technology to meet the specific needs of technical rescue work.

GORE-TEX CROSSTECH PYRAD stretch technology is also durable to withstand industrial decontamination wash cycles. Utilising this revolutionary new fabric in new MSA Bristol Rescue Stretch garments we address the changing world requirements and bring technical rescue garment to the next level.

On the structural fires side, addressing the customer’s desire for freedom of movement and expectations to deliver light weighted garments for the hardest interventions, new lightweight solutions are becoming more popular. Fabric such as Hainsworth’s PBI NRG LP weighs only 190gsm – reducing the risk of heat stress and helping the wearer perform at their best for longer. This light yet highly durable fabric provides flame resistance and chemical protection and is offered as one of the options in MSA Bristol X4 style garments.

Safeguarding for health and safety with decontamination solutions

Firefighting is an inherently dangerous profession. With increasing concerns surrounding exposure to byproducts of combustion and other contamination on fire scenes, many firefighters have a heightened awareness related to professional cleaning, disinfection, and the performance of materials used in their PPE.

Furthermore, through its exclusive partnership with PGI Safety, MSA Bristol supplies particulate blocking hoods across the UK for firefighters, first responders, the military and industrial professionals. DuPont Nomex Nano Flex technology used in PGI Safety hoods provides an outstanding level of flame, heat and particulate protection without sacrificing breathability or comfort. PGI BarriAire hoods offer superb protection against potentially dangerous particles that may be encountered while on a working call.

For over a century, MSA Safety has been committed to developing, manufacturing and supplying dependable, high-quality products and equipment to help first responders and firefighters return home safely at the end of the working day.

As the world evolves, safety equipment evolves, too, with the leading players always looking ahead, harnessing new technologies and collaborating with globally trusted partners to continue to help keep people safe.
