West Midlands Police has seen a massive increase in the number of vehicle dashcam footage submissions from the public as it shares the ongoing success of Operation Snap thanks to a boost in funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner.

In the last 12 months, more than 11000 videos have been submitted to the force by the public, an increase of nearly 4000 on the previous year.

The force thanked the public for sending them the footage, which it said led to 90 per cent of submissions resulting in a ‘positive outcome.’ In June 2024, the public in the West Midlands sent in just under 1500 submissions; back in 2017 when the scheme started, the force received 208 during the entire year.

Operation Snap is not new or exclusive to the West Midlands. The national scheme was set up to encourage members of the public to report and submit digital footage showing potential traffic offences via a secure online form. This can range from driving dangerously or carelessly to overtaking on solid white lines, using a mobile phone while driving, ignoring traffic lights or dangerous driving around other road users, such as horse riders and cyclists.

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster has invested £180,000 into the dashcam footage scheme in the force area.

“I am pleased to see that the additional funding I secured and that has been invested in Operation Snap, is now enabling members of the public to increasingly work with the police, to prevent and tackle careless and reckless drivers, whose actions put people’s lives at risk.”

Simon Foster, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner.

Sgt Steve Evans, who heads up the Operation Snap team said that road safety is “an absolute priority for West Midlands Police and the work of our team is making a real difference.” He shared that as a result of the public sending in clips from their vehicle dashcams, drivers can end up receiving a range of responses from warning letter to facing prosecution in court, potentially resulting in a suspended prison sentence.

The public can stay on top of what happens as a result of their submission as they receive updates on the case via email. Visit the force website to find out more information about how West Midlands is implementing Operation Snap and to access the submission form.
