Police chiefs welcome extra £100m for neighbourhood policing

The Home Office has added an extra £100m of funding for policing in England and Wales, doubling the amount previously announced in December’s provisional financial settlement. This ring-fenced money is part of the government’s pledge to recruit a further 13,000 police officers so that every neighbourhood can have a named, contactable officer.

Announcing the additional funding for neighbourhood policing, the Home Secretary said that restoring local policing would not happen overnight and with this financial boost police forces would be able to get more police officers and police community support officers on the street.

“Every neighbourhood deserves dedicated officers who know their patch, understand residents’ concerns and can tackle problems before they escalate. This investment, alongside new powers we are bringing into law, will help prevent crime and protect our communities, which is at the heart of our Plan for Change.”

Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper.

The funding will land in the next financial year, with forces expected to set out their plan to show how they will use their allocation to increase officers on the street.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council welcomed the additional funds, saying that neighbourhood policing is a “vital part” of how police forces engage with communities to build trust and confidence at a local level.

“Visibility and engagement with local communities has always been central to the British policing model and police leaders are in agreement that it must always remain at the heart of what we do.”

Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, National Police Chiefs’ Council Chair.

This funding boost comes as the government publishes its final police funding settlement that shows total funding for the 43 forces across England and Wales of £17.5bn, up £1.1bn on the previous year. The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners said the extra cash for neighbourhood policing was “a good start towards the overall increase of officers” that they want to see over the course of this parliament.
