A review is underway to update Road Traffic Collision Instructor training in the fire and rescue services.

Road Traffic Collision Instructors are firefighters who train and support their colleagues to respond to road traffic collisions. They play a central role in ensuring that fire and rescue services align with multi-agency approaches and follow best practice extrication and trauma management procedures.

Responding to road traffic collisions has grown more complex in recent years due to the growth in electric vehicles and other technological developments, and so the review has been prompted by a need to update the course content to reflect current safety guidelines.

In addition to an update of the course’s content, the working group behind the consultation, which is led by SFJ Awards, NFCC and United Kingdom Rescue Organisation, has proposed the introduction of a revalidation qualification to support instructors to maintain their competences.

A consultation inviting the representations of stakeholders will remain open until 3 March, after which sector feedback will be incorporated as part of the review.

SFJ Awards Managing Director David Higham said qualificatiojns need to be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure they continue to serve their needs and the needs of the public.

“Our expert working group has conducted a 5-month review to bring the Level 3 Award in Road Traffic Collision Instruction into alignment with current best practices and to introduce the revalidation qualification.

“With the substantive detail of the qualification now updated, this consultation stage seeks the views of stakeholders to ensure that the updates are robust and fit for purpose.

“We therefore welcome representations from stakeholders at to ensure training continues to meet the needs of the sector and reflects the latest advancements in road traffic collision management.”
