£17m fire station for Northamptonshire, but it won’t now include police

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service will get a new fire station if planners agree, but it won’t be a joint hub with the police as the PFCC has reversed a decision made by her predecessor and will now put a stand alone police station elsewhere.

The new £17 million fire station will be located in Moulton and will be built on the site of the current fire station and expanded to make use of nearby land. At the same time, a new site will be found for a visible, accessible police station in the Eastern District of Northampton.

If the planners give the go-ahead, the new fire station will have more space for fire engines and to house the 42-metre-high aerial turntable that was purchased in 2023. It is designed so that firefighters can remove uniform and store equipment that has been exposed to contaminants in a safe environment.

There will also be eight individual dormitories which will offer greater dignity and privacy for a diverse workforce compared to the current shared accommodation in a fire station built in the 1970s.

Setting out her decision to keep fire and police on separate locations, Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone said: “I want both services to work together and share buildings where it makes sense to do so, but I want the Eastern District to retain a visible policing presence – that’s central to my public safety plan. We are working at speed to review the wider estate to make sure it is fit for purpose.”

A planning application will shortly be made to West Northamptonshire Council.
