After the announcement last week that NHS England is to be abolished, arrangements for the transition have started with confirmation of a NHS Transformation Executive Team under the leadership of Jim Mackey as Chief Executive.

The transition into the Department of Health and Social Care will, according to the update from NHS England: “support ongoing business priorities, statutory functions and day to day delivery,” with the new team in post from 1 April.

The new team will be made up of existing leaders and secondments from other parts of the NHS. It is a temporary arrangement with permanent appointments made later when the new structures in the Dept of Health are confirmed.

There are five Director roles in the Transformation Executive Team, along with two Medical Directors, Chief Nursing Officer and seven regional Directors. The deputy to Jim Mackey will be David Probert and he will continue to fulfil his trust role in London while part of the transition.

One of the Director roles in the transition team is focused on urgent and emergency care. Sarah-Jane Marsh, currently CEO at Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital, will also oversee emergency preparedness, response and resilience. This is a role previously held by Stephen Groves who has just retired from the NHS after 45 years’ service.

The full list of appointments can be found on the NHS England website.
