London’s Air Ambulance Charity unveils 15-Year strategy amid record high mission numbers

London’s Air Ambulance Charity has announced its bold new 15-year strategy, Hope Across London, reaffirming its commitment to providing rapid, world-class trauma care to London and setting a new vision and mission for the service.

The launch coincides with the release of the charity’s latest mission statistics, which show that demand for its life-saving service is at its highest ever level.

In 2024, the service treated 2058 patients across London—an increase on last year’s already record-breaking numbers and highlighting the ongoing, urgent need for advanced pre-hospital care in the capital

The mission figures released yesterday show that assaults, road-traffic collisions, and falls from height remain the leading causes of critical injuries in London. Tower Hamlets (104), Westminster (104), Lambeth (102), and Southwark (101) were the busiest boroughs were the busiest boroughs, with incidents recorded in every part of the city—from the City of London and Merton (18 and 21 missions respectively) to the most central and high-demand areas. This year the average number of patients seen each day rose to six.

The data illustrates the advanced surgical skills the medics bring to scene, with figures showing teams performed open chest surgery on average once a week, needed to give a blood transfusions once every 36 hours, and used Rapid Sequence Intubation to deliver pain relief each day.

Hope is at the heart of the charity’s new vision, which emphasises that trauma care is about more than just survival; it is about using the medics’ expert skills to deliver the best possible outcomes for patients and their families, whether that means by saving a life, protecting an injured brain, or providing the opportunity for loved ones to say goodbye.

Following the successful completion of the ‘Up Against Time’ appeal, which raised £15m to replace the charity’s helicopter fleet, London’s Air Ambulance Charity now looks to the future.

The new helicopters, secured through the generous support of Londoners, ensure the sustainability of the service for years to come. However, ongoing funding remains critical to maintaining the cutting-edge skills, technology, and resources that enable the team to deliver pioneering trauma care.

“It is sobering to look at the new mission data and realise that once again, the number of patients we treated has risen.  2,058 patients is not just a statistic – behind this figure are people like us, with networks of friends, families and loved ones who will all have been affected.  We know that trauma never stops.  But neither do we.

“The people of this city came together to secure the future of our helicopter fleet—now, we ask for their continued support to ensure we remain at the forefront of saving lives and shaping global clinical practice.”

Jonathan Jenkins, Chief Executive, London’s Air Ambulance Charity.
