Youth Shedz Cymru has won first place at the High Sheriff’s Association of England and Wales National Crimebeat awards for its role in reducing crime and building safer communities. The award, which recognises outstanding contributions to youth crime prevention, was presented at a ceremony in London on 18 March.

The Youth Shedz team, joined by colleagues from the North Wales Police and Community Trust and young people from the Colwyn Bay, Mochdre and Llandudno Junction Youth Sheds, attended the event to celebrate their achievement.

“I am delighted that Youth Shedz has won the National Crimebeat award for their outstanding work with young people in North Wales.

“Supporting victims and communities are cornerstones of my plan to fight crime in North Wales, and Scott and the team at Youth Shedz do a fantastic job in spreading the message of positive citizenship among young people throughout all the towns and villages where they have a presence.”

Andy Dunbobbin, North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner.

Founded in 2018 by Scott Jenkinson, Youth Shedz started in Denbigh and has since expanded to 12 locations across North Wales, including Rhyl, Kinmel Bay, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Buckley and Holyhead. The initiative also runs ‘Betsi,’ a mobile shed that brings activities to different communities.

More than just a community space, each Youth Shed provides young people with a place to connect and take part in positive activities, reducing anti-social behaviour in the area. With an ethos of inclusivity, the initiative supports those who may not engage with mainstream youth services.

“I have seen first-hand the difference they make and think it is great they are now getting recognition on a national scale. Scott, the Youth Shedz team and all the young people involved have done North Wales proud!”

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin has backed Youth Shedz, helping secure funding through the Your Community, Your Choice initiative, which uses money seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The organisation has also received support from the PCC’s Innovate to Grow fund, designed to foster new approaches to crime prevention.
