Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen and Chief Constable Rachel Bacon officially opened Durham’s new Investigative Hub, joined by local dignitaries and His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Mrs Sue Snowdon.

Located near Spennymoor, the facility is the largest single investment made by the PCC on behalf of Durham Constabulary. The Hub features 48 modern cells, specialist detective teams, a crime scene investigation unit, evidence stores, and the firearms licensing department.

During the opening event, guests toured the facility and saw how its integrated approach is already improving efficiency. On-site healthcare means detainees no longer need to leave for medical treatment, freeing up officers for frontline duties. Investigative teams based within the Hub are also reducing custody times, improving case progression and resource allocation.

With multiple custody desks, officers can process several detainees at once, reducing booking times and getting them back on the streets faster. The modern layout enhances safety for staff, detainees, and visiting professionals, aligning with Home Office design guidance.

Joy Allen called the opening a “proud moment,” recognising the effort and dedication behind the project.

“I don’t think any of us anticipated how cutting-edge this project would be until it all came together. To say it puts Durham on the map is an understatement; this is what every policing development should aspire to, and we are very lucky to have it here, on our turf!”

Mrs Snowdon unveiled a commemorative plaque, praising the facility’s impact on policing and the justice system. “This Hub will transform case handling, cutting delays and reducing unnecessary hearings,” she said, commending Allen and Bacon for their leadership in delivering a cutting-edge facility.

Since accepting its first detainees in December, the Hub has already made a difference. Chief Constable Bacon highlighted its role in modern policing: “This facility creates safer spaces for detainees, staff and partners while streamlining processes. It’s a true multi-agency approach, and I’m incredibly proud of everyone involved.”
