Norfolk PCC teams up with charity to offer free bystander training

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk is partnering with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to drive awareness of street harassment and upskill and empower bystanders across Norfolk to deal with all harassment types.

Coming after last year’s super-complaint by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, police forces are now doubling down on harassment by finding new ways to help the public develop skills to be a confident bystander.

The free training called Stand up Against Harassment is provided by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and is funded by L’Oréal Paris. Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Sarah Taylor, worked with the Trust to set up free 30-minute training sessions specifically for business owners in the county but this is a widely available online training approach which anyone can sign up to attend.

The programme originated from the American NGO Right To Be and L’Oreal Paris and aims to create a global community of bystanders who can safely intervene when they see harassment to support the victim and deter the harasser. To date this programme has rolled out across 40 countries and trained over 3.4m bystanders.

Urging local business owners to take advantage of this free training, PCC Sarah Taylor said: “It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that people are safe, especially women and young girls, when they go for a night out enjoying the bars and clubs in the night time economy.”
