Risks posed to transport from climate-related hazards – new guidance

The Department of Transport has teamed up with the Met Office to release a series of guidance summaries that provide policy makers and planners with information to understand and manage climate-related hazards and the risks they pose to the transport network.

The Transport Hazard Summaries series provides a resource for assessing risks and increasing resilience. It focuses on natural hazards and other hazards that are not the result of malicious acts, their impacts and how they may change in future.

While the series is aimed at those working in the transport industry, it is a useful resource for planners in emergency services.

The series starts with a summary document that introduces common climate concepts that are used throughout. It then looks at risks and resilience and introduces specific climate-related hazards in individual guides to give more information on projected changes and the impacts to transport. The list includes: cold weather, drought and extreme heat.

The short nine-page guides can be found here – Transport hazard summaries.
