Jersey fire service calls for empty properties to train in

Jersey Fire & Rescue Service is looking for empty properties on the island which it can use for firefighter training.

The service is calling on property owners and developers to help support firefighter training by offering access to empty domestic or commercial properties.

As part of ongoing efforts to ensure crews remain fully prepared to respond to emergencies, the service is seeking unused buildings where it can safely conduct breathing apparatus training. This essential training helps firefighters maintain the skills and confidence needed to work in smoke-filled and hazardous environments.

Realistic training environments are critical. Having access to empty buildings – whether houses, offices, or industrial units – allows crews to practice in conditions that closely mimic real incidents, without putting lives or property at risk.

Jersey Fire & Rescue Service said that the problem with always using the same training venues is that it leads to actions becoming muscle memories, rather than utilising effective search techniques.

The Service is appealing to anyone with knowledge of vacant properties, whether short or long term, to get in touch or help spread the word.

Jersey Fire & Rescue Service said the smoke it uses for training exercises is cosmetic and does not cause any lasting damage to properties.

Anyone interested in helping is encouraged to contact the service by email.
