After 26 years of volunteering his Friday evenings to mentoring young people at Ringwood Fire Station, Kevin Morrison has officially hung up his instructor’s uniform — but his legacy will live on for years to come.

Kevin’s long-standing service and retirement were formally recognised at the Ringwood Fire Cadets’ end-of-term pass out parade earlier this month. Among those congratulating him was Deputy Chief Fire Officer Shantha Dickinson, who praised Kevin’s extraordinary impact on the cadet programme.

“The dedication and passion Kevin has shown the Ringwood unit and all the instructors and cadets who have passed through it is nothing short of inspirational.

“Kevin’s selfless commitment over the years has changed and shaped the lives of quite literally hundreds of local Ringwood young people, many of whom have gone on to pursue careers within the emergency or military services.”

To honour Kevin’s remarkable contribution, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has introduced a new annual award in his name. The Kevin Morrison Fire Cadet Instructor of the Year trophy will be presented each year to a volunteer instructor who embodies the Service’s values and inspires young people through their actions and commitment.

Children and Young People Delivery Manager Joanna Gregory announced the award: “Our hope is that this award will represent everything that Kevin has stood for and selflessly given over his 26 years of service. The impact of his passion and dedication will continue to be felt within Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Cadets for many more years to come.”

The inaugural winner of the Kevin Morrison award is Lead Fire Cadet Instructor Emily Frith, recognised for her outstanding leadership, personal resilience, and calm, caring presence at the Gosport Fire Cadet unit.

As the Service looks to the future, it is actively seeking new Volunteer Fire Cadet Instructors to support units across the region. No previous experience is necessary — just enthusiasm, dedication, and a willingness to make a difference. Full training and uniform are provided.
