Fire Cadets shine at passing out parade in Southend

Proud families looked on as young Fire Cadets from Southend showcased months of training with an impressive display of firefighting skills, teamwork and confidence at their Passing Out Parade.

The event, held at Southend Fire Station, marked the culmination of a 40‑week programme for cadets aged 13 to 17. Designed to build practical fire service knowledge alongside leadership, resilience, and communication skills, the scheme is part of the nationally recognised Essex Fire Cadet Programme.

During the ceremony, cadets demonstrated a range of operational skills, including hose running, ladder pitching, first aid, and search and rescue drills. The live demonstrations gave friends, family, and fire service colleagues a clear view of the cadets’ progress since joining the course.

Dave Bond, Area Manager for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, praised the group’s achievements: “The skills you’ve learned – leadership, communication and teamwork – transfer into anything you choose to do. You’ve shown those in absolute abundance. Hold on to that, because you’ve proved this year that you can achieve anything you set your mind to.”

The Essex Fire Cadet Programme runs across seven units in the county and offers a three‑year progression route through Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Alongside practical firefighting and classroom‑based learning, cadets also have the opportunity to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, developing further skills in leadership, resilience, and community engagement.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of Cadet of the Year to Brooke Sadler, who was recognised for her dedication, teamwork, and support for fellow cadets. Brooke, who has completed the Silver tier, said:

“I’ve really enjoyed it. I have learned so much about practical firefighting skills and I have made a good group of friends from it.”

Brooke now plans to progress to the Gold tier and complete her Duke of Edinburgh Award. Her father, Rob Sadler, said the programme had made a lasting impact:

“Brooke has grown in confidence, developed real leadership skills, and pushed herself to try things she wouldn’t have done before. I’m incredibly proud.”

Lead Instructor Steve Bonsor also thanked the Cadet Instructors and support staff whose commitment and guidance have helped the young participants thrive.

The Passing Out Parade not only celebrated the cadets’ hard work but also reflected the programme’s wider aim: to inspire young people and equip them with the skills and confidence to succeed both within and beyond the fire service.
