Government outlines sensitive approach to carefully dismantle Grenfell Tower

The government has detailed its plans for the careful and respectful dismantling of Grenfell Tower, emphasising a trauma-aware approach that honours the building’s significance to bereaved families, survivors, and the local community.

Preparations are underway for the complex process, which will see the Tower taken down floor-by-floor, starting from the top. Each floor is expected to take around a month to dismantle. Large external components, such as columns, will be removed by crane in covered containers to ensure dignity and discretion.

All work will take place behind the Tower’s familiar white wrapping, which will remain in place to shield the site. The green heart banner, a symbol of remembrance, will stay on display, being repositioned as scaffolding is removed. The banners will continue to be illuminated at night to ensure the Tower retains a visible presence on the skyline.

Key elements of the building, including the architectural crown, will be preserved for potential inclusion in a future memorial, should the community wish. The government is also consulting bereaved families on a separate sacred site where materials from the Tower will be respectfully laid to rest, guided by advice from faith leaders.

Deconstruct UK (DUK), which has managed the site’s safety since 2017, has been appointed as the principal contractor to lead the dismantling. Their long-standing involvement and safety credentials were cited as reasons for their selection. Regular meetings with DUK and government officials will be held to keep residents informed and to address community concerns.

The Health and Safety Executive will maintain independent oversight of the works, which are designed to minimise noise and disruption. The government has also pledged ongoing support for the health and wellbeing of residents, with services available through NHS and local providers.
