A new children’s book designed to support the wellbeing of emergency service workers and their families has been launched by Oscar Kilo, the National Police Wellbeing Service.

Darcy Visits the Allotment tells the story of Darcy, one of the organisation’s much-loved OK9 wellbeing dogs, as she chats to friends in her allotment community about the importance of listening and supporting one another.

The book was officially unveiled at a special event held at the very allotment where Darcy spends her time. Emergency service staff and their families enjoyed a storytelling session, meeting Darcy in person alongside other animal “stars” from the book.

Written by PC Cathy Veale, a member of Devon & Cornwall Police’s Wellbeing team and Darcy’s handler, the book was inspired by her work supporting colleagues in the emergency services.

“I wanted to write something that would help the families of emergency service staff, and Darcy was the obvious inspiration.

“She’s so kind, and people love talking to her. Connecting with nature, animals and each other is a great way to improve mental health, and I hope the book encourages conversations about how to cope when things feel difficult.”

The book’s illustrations were created by Cathy’s daughter, Kirsty. “I might be slightly biased,” Cathy added, “but I think they’re absolutely fabulous and really capture the spirit of the story.”

Darcy is part of Oscar Kilo’s OK9 programme, where specially trained dogs and their volunteer handlers provide emotional support to police, fire and ambulance staff. The initiative aims to help staff relax, open up and, where necessary, be guided towards further help.

Garry Botterill, Oscar Kilo OK9 wellbeing and trauma support dogs lead, said: “This book beautifully portrays the values of Oscar Kilo peer support. Our OK9 wellbeing dogs help us reach out to our colleagues with the message: ‘we see you; we will listen, and we will support you.’”

Copies of Darcy Visits the Allotment are being distributed this summer through OK9 dog handlers. They will be gifted to families and children who may need additional support and shared at family events to raise awareness of the wellbeing and trauma support service. An e-book edition is in development and is expected to be available via the Oscar Kilo website this autumn.

The industry will once again be gathering at the NEC, Birmingham for The Emergency Services Show, co-located with The Emergency Tech Show, on 17-18 September, check out the full exhibitor list here. You can find Oscar Kilo in Hall 5, part of the Collaboration Zone on stand CZ57.
