Spectrum VR expands Thurrock site to keep emergency vehicles on the road

When your vehicle is your lifeline, whether it’s a fire appliance, an ambulance or a frontline police vehicle, downtime isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a risk to the community you serve. That’s why, in the world of commercial vehicle repairs, few names carry as much weight as Spectrum VR.

Founded in 1986 by Marc Watts and his wife Louise, this family-run business has grown from modest beginnings into one of the UK’s most respected repair specialists. And now, with the opening of a brand-new, purpose-built facility in Thurrock, Spectrum VR is once again pushing the limits of what a repair centre can deliver – especially for those who need their vehicles ready at a moment’s notice.

An investment of more than £6m isn’t just about bigger premises – it’s about meeting mission-critical demands. Built on part of the company’s original Essex site, the new 21,000 sq. ft. building expands Spectrum’s Thurrock footprint to a staggering 40,000 sq. ft. Conveniently located just off a major roundabout near Lakeside shopping centre, the site offers rapid access for urgent jobs and high visibility for the community it serves.

The previous building had done its job, but it couldn’t keep pace with modern fleet requirements – especially for large-scale emergency vehicles. In its place now stands a modern, meticulously planned facility with seven oversized bays, each 21 metres deep, capable of housing the biggest trucks, buses, motorhomes and emergency vehicles of any size – perfect for handling everything from pump ladders to patient transporters.

Spectrum VR hasn’t just built bigger – they’ve built smarter. The site houses the latest HAWEKA laser alignment systems, ADAS calibration tools, and dedicated electric vehicle repair equipment, along with drone-assisted damage assessment for rapid, accurate diagnostics. The £1m investment in a new IT infrastructure means faster communication, improved training and efficient turnaround – because for an emergency service, waiting days for an update isn’t an option.

For Spectrum VR, this facility is about more than square footage – it’s about creating a professional environment that attracts skilled technicians who understand the responsibility of working on life-saving equipment. The 8,000 sq. ft. office space includes state-of-the-art meeting rooms with video conferencing capabilities, ensuring smooth coordination between repair teams and fleet managers, no matter where they are.

Growth at Spectrum has always been deliberate and considered. In 2009, we acquired a Bodyshop in Sidcup, Kent, ensuring coverage on both sides of the Thames – vital for emergency fleets that operate across wide territories such as London and the Southeast and can’t afford to be hindered by geographic barriers.

Spectrum VR’s sites carry the BS 10125 Kitemark, are Mercedes-Benz approved, and trusted by major commercial vehicle names like Gray & Adams and Schmitz Cargobull. We are also accredited under the VBRA Elite Truck Standard, cementing our reputation for quality, safety, and compliance. The Spectrum VR Group are approved by most of the most leading insurance and accident management companies.

What truly sets Spectrum apart is its vision. This new facility isn’t just a place to fix vehicles – it’s a hub designed to keep the wheels of public service turning. Every bay, every tool, every process has been built around one goal: to return vehicles to service quickly, safely and to the highest possible standard.

Because in the world of emergency response, every second counts – and Spectrum VR is here to make sure your vehicles are ready when you need them most.

If you’re looking for a commercial vehicle repair partner that combines decades of experience with the latest technology, we’d love to hear from you. Visit one of our sites and see how Spectrum VR sets new industry standards. Whether a minor repair or a major rebuild, we’re here to get your emergency service response vehicles back on the road – safely, efficiently and to the highest standard.
